Kakegurui-Compulsive Gambler (Season 1): Anime: “Psychotic gambling is… Psycho?”

Hey guys, how’s it going? Rahul here coming in with a brand new blog. I hope everyone is having an amazing week. So, let’s begin!

Hyakkaou Private Academy is a unique school where, after school hours, the students turn into gambling freaks. The amount of money you earn or lose decide your faith and status in the school. The school is full of rich students whose parents are big business men or politicians.

Yumeko Jabami is a new student at school with an excess obsession for gambling. She is a great thinker and gambles using her luck and brain. Her amazing skill allows her to gain a great name and allows her to challenge members of the Student Council. But, Jabami doesn’t play for the money. She plays for the sheer thrill of gambling your life away.

Let me start off by saying, Netflix does not usually make great anime. Out of all the Netflix anime that I have seen, this was among the best and this still isn’t that high up.

The concept of this anime is something I’ve never seen before. However, I can not say the same for the style of anime. Even though you almost never see an anime about gambling, you will see quite often an obsessive yet friendly main character who is the sole challenger of all the “higher-ups” of the show.

However, I can not bring down the anime when it comes to the concept. The games that have been depicted and the playing of the games is just so fascinating and enjoying that you can’t help but get completely engrossed into the show. The best part of the anime has to be it’s unpredictability which adds to the immense suspense and keeps you on your feet for the duration of many episodes. By unpredictability I mean that you never even know who is going to win each match (big breather from seeing anime where only main characters can win and no one else).

Another let down to this anime is the story. Although the games are beyond amazing, the story is extremely weak and is just there for the sole purpose of making this a “show”. The characters, friendships, and rivals are all meaningless and honestly, the only thing the anime really required was an introduction of the rivals personality and traits and then move on with the match. Minimal talking and a basic story line would’ve been more than enough to make this anime great but they over complicated it with excess drama and unnecessary plot twists.

Netflix really knows how to make an “appealing” anime because this anime does not come short when you think of an anime with good “sex appeal”. Throughout the anime you see a few characters who get turned on by simply gambling and there are also quite a few scenes where the anime doesn’t hold back to make the anime more “appealing”.

Still, since the anime was successful in managing to keep at least a game per episode, the anime isn’t too bad and it quite enjoyable. The opening is actually pretty good and is quite different from other anime openings. I do not hold high expectations for the second season because I feel there is going to be more excessive drama and less gambling. I hope I get proves wrong. Overall okay.

I would give this season of the anime 3/5 stars.
